Bar RafaeliNew York Fashion Week, an event that has produced many years of outrage over skeletal models on the runways, is just around the corner. Is that why Leo DiCaprio’s on-again girlfriend and model Bar Rafaeli, 25, tweeted on Aug. 30, “I get so sad when I see 15-year-old pale extremely skinny models at the agency looking all shaky and hungry…when will it end?!?!?” We’re assuming Bar is referring to the model agency that reps her — One Management in NYC and that the 15-year-old skinny models are starving in preparation of their booking appointments with different designers — hoping to land runway spots. Yay to you Bar for speaking out against the scary skinnyness that sadly still rules too many runways — god knows why. Neither women — who are supposed to buy the clothes — nor men — like that shaky, hungry look. Bar’s tweets are repeatedly outspoken about the dangers of plastic surgery, drugs, alcohol and unhealthy living, “Some people are addicted to drugs and others addicted to alcohol. Me? I’m addicted to pomegranate juice,” she tweeted yesterday. “Seriously… plastic surgery is not helping your impact on young women or your looks,” she also pointed out. I’m glad she showed me this, because it’s interesting for me to see someone working inside the modeling industry speak out about the living and working conditions that models/inspiring models are pressured to endure just to get work. I read a lot of articles that have similar opinions from actresses and celebrities on this subject, but there is more raw truth when it comes within the industry. It’s shocking that Bar is talking about 15 year olds – I personally did not know that 15 year olds could do runway or mainstream ads- I thought it was more for young adults. But it makes sense – models probably have to start early because the competition is so high. However, teenage years are probably the worst times to be dieting or doing any other sort of grueling body-slimming habit – their bodies are developing. It’s depressing to think about girls (or boys!) this young worrying about fitting into sizes instead of enjoying life. I hope that girls getting into the industry look up to Bar and think about her messages – perhaps it will keep them from developing an eating disorder in the future or keep their sanity intact while pursuing a rough career.
