The fight against street harassment and victim-blaming

Street harassment is something that women deal with on a nearly daily basis. Men, of course, can also be victims of street harassment but it is much more common for women to be harassed. Many people, including the law, don’t take street harassment very seriously because it’s not physical assault. However, it is still very wrong because it promotes the idea that women are the property of the public and the behavior is threatening. I don’t know one woman who enjoys these “compliments” (or sometimes, insults). It just makes us…

Why does feminism scare people?

If you’re familiar with our website and the content we post about on Beutiful, you know we’re huge promoters of women’s rights and equality. That being said, I definitely consider myself a feminist…although I rarely mention the “f” word in conversation. This is sadly because I feel that the word has gotten a negative connotation attached to it over the years and found it can be off-putting to someone who doesn’t understand the true definition of a feminist. The Re-envisioning the Female Body displayed twelve large pictures of vaginas to encourage a discussion about the discrimination and exploitation of the female body. A model who posed for one on the posters said that she was nervous at first but…

Pregnancy is rarely a result of rape?

I’m having a really hard time understanding this story. Celeste Greig, leader of the California Republican Assembly, said during an interview that “the percentage of pregnancies due to rape is small because it’s an act of violence, because the body is traumatized.” I let you process that. According to Greig there is a small chance you may get pregnant from a violent rape. Isn’t all rape a violent act? Why do these ignorant politicians keep making false statements about rape. To say that a woman’s body can stop from getting…
