Suit Urself: Are we leaving men out?

We’ve been having a great time doing the Suit Urself Swimsuit Challenge this summer! It’s a great time for women to start accepting themselves in general…with so many body-positive movements and powerful women speaking out against the media and championing the individual woman’s right to love whatever body she has. There’s so much momentum in this healthier way of living and thinking. I can’t wait to see where it takes us in a few years’ time! However, I wish things were moving as quickly for men. Body image isn’t just…

Katie Hopkins judges children by their “lower-class” names

Over the weekend I stumbled across a gross little video of contestant Katie Hopkins (from the U.K.’s version of The Apprentice) speaking on a British morning talk show about how she determined whether other children were worthy of playing with her own. The deciding factor? Their names. In an anti-working class rant, Katie stated that names like “Tyler,” Charmain”, “Kylie” and “Chantal”, as well as names rooted in geography like “London” or “Brooklyn,” were all names that she would not allow her children to interact with (even though her own daughter’s name is…

Amy Barbera: Spreading inspiration and love through music

I was privileged to “meet” Amy Barbera, an inspirational singer/songwriter, on Twitter just a few weeks ago. In our time of speaking back and forth, I must say that this woman continues to impress and amaze me! I knew her recovery would inspire those who were struggling and give them hope. I delved deeper into her music and was so pleasantly surprised. Amy…

Father to daughter: I’m sorry I used to be a sexist

With Father’s Day taking place earlier this month, I felt this was a valid subject to talk about – perhaps one that many fathers could relate to. Has having a daughter opened your eyes to the sexism and challenges that women are facing, that your daughter will one day face? Mo Ellieithee is a Democratic political consultant in Washington, DC, and was a traveling press secretary for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. He is also the father of a three-year old girl. I was the guy who didn’t even notice all…

Mormon Family Fights for Son’s LGBT Rights

Frameline 37: the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival being held this weekend features a series of documentaries produced by the Family Acceptance Project. The films will show the journey families of different ethnicity and religious beliefs take to support their children whether they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. One family depicted in the documentary are the Montgomerys. A traditionally Mormon family, the Montgomerys went door to door to raise support for Proposition 8 (a law that would only recognize male/female marriages) in 2008. However, after their son Jordan…
