Elementary school discriminates against child
Kathryn Mathis is taking a stand against a Colorado Elementary school after they said her daughter Coy couldn’t use the girls restroom anymore. Coy was born male but identifies with being female. After being seen by a psychologist it was confirmed that Coy was transgender. When Coy was allowed to attend school as a female, all of the anxiety and depression she felt started to go away. On January 5th in Irondale, Alabama, Richie Covington was attacked because of his sexuality. Richie has been open about being gay for over a decade, but since recently moving back to the South he says he’s been ridiculed, harassed, and now attacked. Currently, hate crimes on the books in Alabama only cover race, religion, and disabilities. Sexual orientation and gender identity aren’t a part of the hate crime laws. Radio Show Refers to Transgender Athlete as “It”
Recently two ESPN radio hosts mocked transgender basketball player, Gabrielle Ludwig. Hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin called Ludwig “it” and he/she, and even said that transgender people shouldn’t play sports. Both hosts half heartily apologized and were suspended by the station. I don’t think the radio hosts deserve any more attention. That’s why I love this article by the Huffington Post were they actually talk about Ludwig the athlete not the incident that happened.
