The Carondelet all-girls High School in California announced that they would be serving a meal of fried chicken, cornbread, and watermelon in honor of Black History Month. Students and parents were outraged that the school would be so insensitive, denouncing the menu as a celebration of stereotypes, not history. After realizing their error, the school changed the lunch menu and announced they would be holding an assembly on diversity. The school principal Nancy Libby apologized saying: “I’d like to apologize for this announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members.” This was an awful move on the Carondelet school. Creating a lunch menu based on African American stereotypes during Black History Month was going to come across as offensive no matter what. I’m not sure I understand why the school chose to hold an assembly on diversity though, it seems that everyone but the faculty could see how the menu was inappropriate. Source: Huffington Post
