Beyonce recently did an interview with British Vogue where she discusses being a woman and defending the title of her upcoming album and accompanying tour. On believing in equal rights for all: “But I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman. I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.” On her demanding job: “I’m always bruised somewhere – my legs, my hips. But you’ve already started so you’ve just gotta fight through it.” On defending using Mrs. Carter for her world tour name: “I feel like Mrs. Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been. It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do’. The purpose of my body became completely different.” I know that the word “feminism” is getting thrown around a lot these days and many people are going to roll their eyes at the fact that Beyonce is labeling herself as a feminist. This is the actual definition for Feminism in the dictionary: The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. The reason for sharing the definition is to validate Beyonce’s claim. She is a feminist and demands the equal treatment that all women deserve. When it comes to Beyonce, there are two groups of people who have opinions, those who like her and those who don’t. I really had no opinion on Beyonce; I like some of her songs but I really didn’t care for her. Then I watched the HBO Documentary she did entitled “Life Is But A Dream” and I fell in love with her and how hard she truly works to be where she is and maintain that position. A man doesn’t have to juggle the same amount of stresses and challenges a woman does. In the documentary you see Beyonce deal with being pregnant and suffering a miscarriage but still having to do appearances, performances, and having to act like the flawless goddess she portrays. Each quote Beyonce gives in this interview is what we as women should all believe. We should love being women, strong independent women that don’t need to feel validated by a man for anything. Our work ethic and educational value should be rewarded with equal pay to men. We need to stop being seen as sex objects and stop seeing ourselves as sex objects for men. Women are worth so much more and we need to start realizing that. We need Feminism. In honor of this Beyonce post I encourage you all to listen to Who Run the World by Beyonce. It is immensely empowering.
