Christina Aguilera was one of many artists that took part in the American Music Awards held on Sunday. She performed songs off of her new album “Lotus”(which in my opinion is an amazing album, something along the lines of Stipped). However it wasn’t her empowering song choices or her revealing outfit that caused a stir, it was her new found curvy body that caused a backlash. While performing the song “Army of Me” backup dancer had bags over the heads with negative words written on them. Each dancer removes the bag from their heads to show that words cannot confine them and that they can rise above the hate. When Christina performs “Let There Be Love” she has dancers of all body types and personalities dance with her. She tells the audience “This is a Celebration of all of us, a Revolution”, before singing. On the giant screens behind her phrases like: “Let there be unity; Let there be acceptance; You are beautiful” are displayed. Unfortunately it’s hard to find a positive article about Aguilera’s inspiring performance. Instead news outlets and blogs decided to comment on her weight and turned her positive performance into a negative. I know recently Christina has talked about her recent weight gain and has said in an Us Weekly interview that “The challenge I’ve always had is being too thin, so I love that now I have a booty.” She’s even been defend by co-panelist on The Voice Adam Levine in an Us Weekly interview in which he said “I think it’s horrible and I’ll totally defend her when people say things like that because it’s no one’s business.” You can check out her AMA performance and below is an article about the Aguilera’s twitter and blog backlash. Nicki Minaj and Christina Aguilera were blonde bombshells at the AMA Awards on Sunday night. Minaj’s hair was busy and full of volume and she sported a neon strapless gown to accept her first award. Aguilera wore a blonde bob in a purple dress that matched her eyeshadow. Aguilera also performed a medley of material from her new album and joined Pitbull onstage. But it wasn’t her performance, or her hair, that had tongues wagging — it was Aguilera’s much fuller figure. Here are a few representative tweets from AMA viewers: “Carrie Underwood is what Christina Aguilera thinks she looks like right now. And no one has the heart to tell her “NAWL.”” “Christina Aguilera looks like Snooki. No wait, that’s an insult to Snooki.” “Did Christina Aguilera eat one of Willy Wonka’s blueberries?” But Aguilera was not without her Twitter defenders. “Christina Aguilera looked gorgeous last night. I love this dress and the diva attitude she is serving!” “Anyone who says Christina Aguilera isnt amazing can leave nearest exit to the left thanks.’ “New hairstyle and looking gorgeous! Christina Aguilera aka Legendtina Godulara!”
