Ugly Bug BallBritish website The Ugly Bug Ball was created to help “aesthetically challenged” people find true love. Kind of like a Beautiful People for the rest of us. Tom Clifford, who had been single since 1998, was using the site when he stumbled across Janine Walker’s profile in late August. He decided to send her a message, and now, four dates later, the two are engaged and set to be married in December. The Ugly Bug Ball is even giving the two a free honeymoon to lovely Borth, Wales. So, the good news is that you shouldn’t despair if you’re one of the few people realistic enough to realize you probably aren’t a 7, because somewhere out there, there’s a man with “a face that makes children cry” (Tom’s words, not ours) who will love you for who you are. Seriously, you guys, we’re glad you found happiness, but get thee to a self-esteem workshop. Nobody deserves to think of themselves that way. I’m all for being able to laugh at yourself – even your “aesthetically challenged” self. But when will we get away form labeling ourselves – ugly, pretty, fat, skinny, etc.? It’s all shallow and it’s nothing that you would want to base a serious long-term relationship on! To be fair, the site’s tagline says “real dating for real people.” I like this idea much more than the Beautiful People dating website, which is probably lacking in substance considering it’s clientele. It’s nice that a site recognizes that most of us aren’t models or will never look like one, but I still think The Ugly Bug Ball went the same route – basing their membership on appearance.
